High-quality leather shoes, if properly cared for, last for decades. Genuine leather is a living material that requires attention and nourishment. According to statistics from our clients at Vicelli, regular care extends the life of shoes by 3-4 times compared to occasional cleaning. We tell you how to properly care for leather shoes.
Daily care: simple habits for longevity
After each wear, wipe your shoes with a soft, dry cloth or natural bristle brush. This removes surface dust and dirt that gradually destroys the structure of the leather. Pay special attention to the folds in the fold area – this is where the most dirt accumulates.
Give your shoes at least 24 hours to rest between wearings. Leather absorbs moisture from your feet and needs time to dry. Use wooden blocks to maintain their shape, absorb moisture, and prevent creases.
Important: Never dry wet shoes on a radiator or in direct sunlight. High temperatures dry out the leather, causing it to crack and deform. Stuff the shoes with newspapers and leave to dry at room temperature.
Cleaning: How to Remove Dirt Without Harm
For smooth leather , use special cleaners or a mild soap diluted in water. Apply the foam to a damp cloth (not directly on the shoe) and gently wipe the surface. Remove any residue with a clean damp cloth and dry.
Suede and nubuck require a more delicate approach. Use special rubber brushes or erasers for suede. Clean only after the shoes are completely dry. For difficult stains, there are specialized foam cleaners – they dissolve dirt without rubbing into the structure of the material.
Patent leather does not like aggressive products. Wipe it with a soft damp cloth, if necessary, use a special cleaner for patent leather. After cleaning, apply a thin layer of Vaseline or a special product for patent leather – it prevents cracks.
Skin nourishment: creams, waxes, balms
Leather contains natural oils that evaporate over time. Nourishing with creams restores elasticity and protects against drying out. The frequency of treatment depends on the intensity of wear: 1-2 times a week for everyday shoes, once a month for festive ones.
How to apply the cream correctly:
- Clean your shoes from dust and dirt
- Apply the cream with a soft cloth or a special brush in a thin, even layer.
- Let the cream absorb for 10-15 minutes.
- Polish the surface with a soft cloth until shiny.
Choice of product: cream is suitable for daily care and nourishment, wax creates a water-repellent protective layer (ideal for autumn and winter), balm deeply nourishes overdried skin. At Vicelli, we recommend alternating cream and wax depending on the season.
Protection from moisture and reagents
The biggest enemy of leather shoes is not rain, but the chemicals on the roads in winter. They dissolve the fats in the leather, leave white spots and cause cracks.
Prevention: Before going outside in wet weather, treat your shoes with a water-repellent spray or wax. Apply the product 2-3 hours before going outside so that it dries completely. Repeat the treatment every 5-7 days during the wet season.
If your shoes get wet: remove moisture with paper towels, stuff them with newspapers, and leave them to dry. After drying, apply a nourishing cream — water washes away fats, and the skin needs to be restored.
Removing salt stains: mix table vinegar with water (1:2), gently rub the stains, remove the residue with a clean damp cloth. After drying, apply cream. Never use aggressive solvents – they destroy the pigment.
Color restoration and scratch masking
Even with careful wear, scratches and scuffs appear on shoes. To eliminate them, use:
Coloring cream – contains pigments that even out the color. Choose the exact shade or one shade darker. Lighter creams will not mask imperfections.
Special markers and paints – for deep scratches. Apply carefully, in a thin layer, let dry and polish.
Professional restoration – for complex damage, major scuffs or discoloration of the entire shoe. At the Vicelli workshop, we perform complete restoration: from replacing the sole to repainting and updating the leather texture.
Storage: how to maintain shape and quality
Proper storage is half the battle. Basic rules:
Use shoe inserts — a must for all shoes and boots. Wooden shoe inserts (cedar, beech) are better than plastic ones — they absorb moisture and odors.
Store in cloth bags — they protect against dust but allow air to pass through. Avoid plastic bags — they suffocate the leather and cause mold.
Control the conditions: optimal temperature 18-22°C, humidity 50-60%. Avoid direct sunlight, heat sources and dampness. The basement or attic are the worst places to store shoes.
Seasonal shoes: before storing, clean, treat with cream, and insert insoles. Take out shoes every 2-3 months, air them out, and check their condition.
Common care mistakes
Excessive use of water – frequent wetting can cause the skin to become rough and cracked. Minimize contact with water, use damp (not wet) cloths.
Incorrect shoe size – too small won’t straighten out creases, too large will stretch the shoe. The shoe should fit snugly but without effort.
Ignoring the first signs of wear and tear —a torn seam, a worn heel, a peeled sole—timely repairs are cheaper and prevent further damage.
Using household products – hand cream, petroleum jelly (except for patent leather), vegetable oil clog the pores of the skin. Use only specialized products for shoes.
Professional care: when to contact a master
Even with regular home care, shoes need professional maintenance. We recommend visiting a workshop:
- Once a season – for preventive inspection, cleaning hard-to-reach places and nourishing the skin with professional products
- For serious contamination – complex stains, reagents, technical oils are best removed in a workshop.
- In case of damage – replace the heels when they are 50% worn, repair the seams at the first deformation
- Before seasonal storage – complete cleaning, feeding and condition check
At Vicelli, we offer comprehensive shoe care: from basic cleaning to full restoration using professional Italian products. We also advise clients on home care, taking into account the characteristics of the skin and wearing conditions.
